On March 21, NJIT’s Campus Center Atrium was abuzz with innovation and insight during the SAET Survey Day 2025, a special event hosted by the university’s School of Applied Engineering and Technology (SAET) and sponsored by its Surveying Engineering Technology (SET) program. The event spotlighted the evolving world of land surveying and the vital role that technology plays in shaping the built environment.
The day’s keynote speaker was James Heiser, President and CEO of DPK Consulting, a leading commercial land surveying firm headquartered in New Jersey. With professional licenses spanning five states—Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware—Heiser brought a wealth of knowledge and industry insight to the event. He also serves as the current President of the New Jersey Society of Professional Land Surveyors (NJSPLS), further underscoring his commitment to advancing the profession.
Heiser delivered a progressive and informative opening presentation on “The Latest in Survey Technology and Its Cutting-Edge Industry Applications,” which captivated students, faculty, and attending industry professionals alike. His talk underscored how modern surveying is being transformed by innovations in data collection, precision measurement, and geospatial analysis. He shared real-world applications, illustrating how the integration of new technologies like 3D scanning, cloud-based data platforms, and autonomous equipment is redefining what’s possible in commercial surveying.
The event also featured a live UAS drone demonstration, showcasing how aerial surveying and photogrammetry are becoming integral tools in the surveyor’s toolkit. This hands-on component highlighted how today’s students must master both traditional practices and emerging technologies to meet the demands of tomorrow’s infrastructure and development challenges.
NJIT’s Surveying Engineering Technology program plays a pivotal role in preparing students for careers in the built environment. Its curriculum blends measurement science, construction technology, and data analytics, ensuring graduates are ready to lead in an industry that is as vital as it is rapidly evolving. Survey Day 2025 provided a platform to demonstrate that leadership starts with education—and grows through partnership with professionals like James Heiser.
James’ participation in this event is more than a presentation—it’s a reflection of his dedication to investing in the next generation of land surveying professionals. Through mentorship, industry engagement, and educational outreach, he is helping to ensure that students are not only well-prepared but inspired to contribute meaningfully to a field that shapes the world around us.
